Dear Katie,

This is your sister Sasha writing to you from Sand Cherry Farms. I’ve been hearing lots about your raccoon chasing in Pueblo. Mom and Scott “telled” me about how you bravely ran out the back door, right over the coon, and then you both circled each other before you chased it up the tree. Good job! You’re not only protecting yourself but also the hens, ducks and geese.

The weather here at the farm has been a mix of warm days and cool nights. It’s so cool that the tomatoes are still producing like crazy. Grandma, or as you know, Ma, is still busy preserving everything she can get her hands on. All the cats are still here, and I think they miss your playful energy.

There are still apples that need picking. Yesterday, Grandpa, or Pa as we know him, and I shared a honey-gold apple on our way to check the windmill. Boy, was it sweet and tasty! When we got to the windmill, we found the fence between the two pastures at the tank knocked down and broken in several places. We think one of the neighbor’s bulls got out and caused the mess. Thankfully, all our cows were safe, and Chet helped us fix the fence.

The cornfields are dry now, and everyone is busy picking corn. Our renter Sam even brought his combine down to help. Meanwhile, your old dog friend Annie has been lording over the place, barking at any of us younger dogs who step out of line.

This warm dry weather has made all the trees burst with beautiful colors. We are seeing lots of birds moving through, and a great-blue heron and a belted kingfisher have taken up living in the irrigation ponds. It’s fun watching them fish and hunt frogs and toads.

Well, Katie, keep those raccoons in line and remember not to get “bited” more than once. Grandpa, Ma, Chet, and I have a full day lined out for tomorrow, so I’ll sign off for now.

Take care, and we all miss having you at Sand Cherry Farms.

Love,
Sasha.
